keep this blog related to my day-to-day life: the
farewell party of one of my best friends from my
MSc program is a good reason to write about the
people I've met here and through Economics in general.
One of the great things about studying in England
is that you get the chance to meet people from all
over the world, something that is quite unusual when
you live in a thirld-world country like mine: no-one
wants to go there, MSc in Economics programmes are
not that good.
Another good thing about being an economist is that
(unless you decide to never leave your office) the
very nature of your work allows you to meet people
from different backgrounds: statisticians,
mathematicians, engineers, politicians, you name it.
And it is the same in my MSc: people from all over
the world, both in geographic and "mind" terms.
Economists are opinionated people. Maybe because we
have been trained as scientists (social scientists,
but scientists anyway) we have to argument thoroughly
our opinions. Is nice to meet people with an opinion,
even if they don't share yours is still nice to debate
with them.
Because of this, I could say most economists
are interesting people, with broad minds. One of my
economist friends also studied literature. some
combine economics with mathematics (like me, my
boyfriend and my good friends NH and MV), or with
engineering, political science... Economics is just
the beginning and this allows people to get into other
fields of knowledge too.
Another good thing about Economics is that there is
sooo inteligent people in there that it really blows
your mind. A friend of mine, whom I respect very much
as a person and as an Economist, is currently studying
his Ph.D at Harvard. A bright guy, wouldn`t you say?
Still he tells me that he has felt quite dumb with the
ultra genius that go there.
Of course I only know about my field, but,
*will it be like that in other careers?*
Today, for the people I've met here, specially my friend MG,
Economics scores 1-1 vs Other fields.
